Nathan Pell grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, and moved to Taipei in 2015. He spent years planning transit and logistics before turning to travel writing, and that habit of working out the fastest, least stressful route never left him. Northern Taiwan’s day trips are his beat.

He has lost count of how many times he has taken bus 1062 up the hill, ridden the train to Ruifang, and timed the last bus back before dark. He visits Jiufen across the year, on quiet weekday mornings and at the weekend crush, so the routes, fares and timings here come from doing them, not from a timetable alone.
